At the January 2015 PGA show, Town Talk Headwear, was fortunate to have a booth next to Catherine Wingate.  Catherine has came a long way in such a short amount of time in the golf fashion world, while keeping up with her law practice.  We were very excited that she tooktime out of her busy day to answer some questions for our blog! Congratulations on your success with your clothing line! What a huge success to win “Best New Product” award at the 2014 PGA Merchandise show! How did that feel to you when you won? I was really surprised and extremely honored! We were in a terrible location at the show in between accessories and equipment. Our booth was like a little shack surrounded by skyscrapers.  I didn't think enough people saw the line to even vote for it! I had worked really hard to develop and create the line.  It was just me working on the line at that point, so I felt like I had been going non-stop since I started creating Wingate up until that point. It was really a wonderful feeling to have that hard work pay off.  The award sits on a table in my apartment. 


Do you still practice law? Yes, my practice is pretty busy right now. I have a wonderful paralegal that helps me. She jumps over to the Wingate side as needed too. I don't think I mentioned that I had an apparel company when I hired her.  People are always surprised whenever they learn about my other business. They tend to want to hear more about Wingate than law.   


How has your lifestyle changed since beginning Catherine Wingate apparel?   My life is a pretty busy, making sure I spend the proper amount of time on both businesses, but I love what I do. Wingate has really grown over the past two years. It amazes me sometimes that I went from an idea just a few years ago to a team of people behind it. It is a lot of work and responsibility, but I love it! 


Do you have any new and exciting projects coming up for 2016? We developed two new collections for Spring 2016; Garden Party and Black Tie Optional.  Black Tie Optional is in honor to the glitz and glamour of award season.  We are based in Los Angeles, and the city really comes alive during that time.  The collection features cute little bow tie prints. Garden Party features pretty, feminine floral prints. 



What do you think women’s golf fashion will be like in the next 5 years? I think there will be more unique options in the market to accommodate a lot of different styles.  There are several companies that have popped up in women's golf. The nice thing is that we all have different styles to provide women golfers. Active-wear in general has come a long way and is very popular right now. I think it will continue to grow and develop. 


What or who inspires you when you are designing for women on the golf course? Our customers inspire me the most.  A lot of the women I meet at golf courses tend to be chic, stylish women. I design with them in mind.  I come up with a story when designing a new for collection.  We then develop prints and color schemes around that story. 


Do you have any advice for anyone that is just starting out in the fashion industry? Be ready to work! I'm not sure people always realize just how much goes into designing a collection and promoting a brand. You have to be ready to hustle.  Also, learn from people who are where ever you want to be.
